  • SSE Renewables – a subsidiary of SSE plc – urgently needed qualified Offshore HSE Medics to join their Dogger Bank Offshore Wind project.

  • Following thorough application, assessment and interview phases, 3 people joined SSE Renewable’s as Offshore HSE Medics on 28th October 2024.

A subsidiary of SSE plc, SSE Renewables are at the heart of the switch to renewable energy across the UK and Ireland, developing and operating Onshore and Offshore Wind Farms Solar Farms, Hydrogen & Power-to-X and Hydroelectric Generation sites.

Currently being developed over three phases – Dogger Bank A, B and C – off the coast of North East England, SSE Renewable’s Dogger Bank Offshore Wind Farm will become the biggest of its kind in the world, with a combined installed capacity of 3.6GW capable of powering up to 6 million homes a year.

Behind the project is a vast, diverse workforce of highly-skilled people – many of which Carbon60 have helped to find and recruit on behalf of SSE – who are key to keeping Dogger Bank on track and on time, and ready to contribute to the UK’s green energy and Net Zero objectives.

As the Dogger Bank Offshore Wind Farm project continues at pace, SSE Renewables realised there was an urgent requirement for Offshore HSE Medics.

These medical professionals are specifically trained – meeting training standards set by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) – to treat injured or unwell workers on offshore sites. As such, they are a key to the Dogger Bank project and workforce, helping to keep everyone on site safe, fit and well.

As SSE do not contract Medics directly, they turned to the recruitment experts at Carbon60 – who have prior experience filling various Offshore vacancies as well as Offshore Medical roles – to urgently find, recruit and mobilise 4 offshore medics.

With SSE’s knowledge of who they would need to hire – and how to hire them – limited, Carbon60 took on the challenge, utilising tried and tested MSP solutions to meet SSE’s specific requirements quickly, efficiently and effectively.

Under the direction of our expert Resourcer Hallam Knight – who’s experience of finding people for such roles and projects would prove vital – we set to work, making the most of our exposure within various renewable energy networks and our vast talent network to promote the roles to the right people, with the right skills and qualifications, for SSE’s needs.

Handed the project in early September 2024, Hallam was required to find, assess, engage with and mobilise suitable candidates within just a month, working towards an early October 2024 start date (this would later be extended to 28th October 2024 due to factors such as vessel movements).

Under the pressures of the tight timeframe, and several challenges including the specific IR35, payroll and insurance restrictions and requirements associated with Offshore work, Hallam received, sorted and matched all candidate applications based on their eligibility and suitability for SSE’s Offshore Medic roles. This included ensuring that any candidates put through to interview phases had the required industry specific and medical qualifications and were able to be onboarded in line with the timeframe.

Throughout, Hallam liaised directly the MSP and Project Teams and Candidates to organise PPE, start dates, and rotations in line with various Vessel movements on different work scopes, to ensure the project was always kept on track and on target.

Despite working to the tight timescale of the project, Hallam and the team managed to garner over 300 applications in just a few days – 207 via job boards and LinkedIn job adverts; 132 via LinkedIn networks, Recruiter Project and our own database of candidates.

Following thorough candidate screening and assessment, the CVs of 15 suitable candidates was sent to SSE Renewables. 7 of these candidates were then chosen for an interview. After interviews were conducted, 5 of the remaining candidates were found suitable for the role and offered a position, of which 4 people accepted.

Finally, following this successful period of candidate discovery, assessment and selection, 3 people joined SSE Renewable’s as Offshore HSE Medics on 28th October 2024.

Hallam helped me secure a fantastic new job as an Offshore Medic with SSE. Communication from start to finish has been excellent; I felt very supported, and help has always been available if I’ve needed to reach out.” – A Candidate selected by Carbon60 for SSE’s Offshore Medic role.
