<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>What is Miles for Mind? </strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Exercise can be a great way to help improve your mental health, plus it&rsquo;s good for the rest of your body too. As Carbon60 is now a truly global business, wouldn&rsquo;t it be great if colleagues across the world could come together to raise some money for Mind UK and help to support the great work they do? With this in mind, we came up with Miles for Mind.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Did you know that the furthest distance between two Carbon60 office locations is 10,514 miles, from Glasgow to Sydney? We pledged to walk, run, cycle, swim &amp; cross-train our way there (without actually going down-under), while raising money for Mind UK in the process. Whoever wants to take part makes a promise that includes the number of miles they&rsquo;re going to travel, and how much money they think they can raise. A tracker captures your daily activity, miles promised, and miles completed, and a weekly total-tracker will show us how many miles we&rsquo;ve clocked up against our target. The initial challenge was to hit that target in 2018, and I&rsquo;m pleased to report that we smashed it! We travelled 14,313.56 miles, and raised over &pound;1500!</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Who is Mind UK?</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Mind UK is a charity that is working to break the stigma around mental health, increasing awareness, offering support to sufferers of mental illnesses and raising money to support initiatives all over the country. Their mission statement is as follows:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>&ldquo;We won&rsquo;t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.&rdquo;</em></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This is something we&rsquo;re passionate about, as poor mental health can affect anyone. <strong>1 in 4 people</strong> in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, and <strong>1 in 6 people</strong> in England are experiencing the most common problems (anxiety and depression) in any given week. So in an office of 40 people, 10 of them will experience poor mental health at some point during the year. This makes it a problem that everyone needs to be aware of, as it can affect work performance, and lead to sick days that could otherwise be avoided. As an employer and a recruiter, it&rsquo;s our responsibility to make sure we&rsquo;re providing adequate support to our employees and candidates if they&rsquo;re suffering.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Employees need to feel like they can openly discuss any problems they might be having, and take time off if they need to recharge, just like they would if they were suffering from a physical illness.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>But we&rsquo;re not finished yet&hellip;</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In a bid to shift the evidence of Christmas over-indulgence, we&rsquo;ve decided to extend Miles for Mind for another 3 months, ending on the date of our company conference, 29<sup>th</sup> March 2019. With lots of new promises already this year, we&rsquo;re feeling very positive.</p>

Miles for Mind

<p>1 in 4 people will experience some form of mental health issue each year in the UK. It should therefore come as no surprise that 1 in 6.8 people will experience mental health problems while at their place of work and 12.7% of all absence days in the UK can be attributed to mental health conditions.</p>
<p>Although mental health problems are by no means uncommon, it is still a taboo subject. Many workers fear they will be stigmatised for needing time off or having particular requirements, but things are rapidly changing.</p>
<p>Today (10 October 2017) is World Mental Health Day, a day in which people all around the world speak out to encourage recognition, understanding and support for mental health conditions. As suffering in silence can often worsen one&rsquo;s mental state, it is important to feel able to open up at work about your personal situation, especially if there&rsquo;s something that can be done to benefit you.</p>
<p>Here are five tips about speaking to your boss about mental health:</p>
<p><strong>1 &ndash; Honesty</strong></p>
<p>Speaking out about mental health at work is likely to benefit your condition, but if you feel hesitant about divulging personal information you could always keep the conversation strictly medical. Explain your diagnosis or the conversation you&rsquo;ve had with your doctor and print out information sheets to clarify your symptoms and requirements.</p>
<p><strong>2 &ndash; Setting</strong></p>
<p>Ensure you set up the meeting in a quiet, private space so both you and your boss feel comfortable and can speak freely about this sensitive subject matter. It will make you feel more confident and will also give your boss an opportunity to ask questions if they need to. If you think you&rsquo;ll find it useful, take in some notes to remind you of what you want to say.</p>
<p><strong>3 &ndash; Cooperation</strong></p>
<p>The best way to improve the treatment of mental health issues in the workplace is to work collaboratively with your boss. Although it is important to be honest and speak out when you&rsquo;re in need of help, it is ultimately up to your boss to decide how that help is given. The more reasonable and logical you are about the situation, the more understanding your boss will be of your point of view.</p>
<p><strong>4 &ndash; Benefits</strong></p>
<p>By speaking up you could potentially be helping your colleagues. You may be working alongside many other people who have been suffering in silence, and this in turn will help your boss; better mental health support in the workplace could save UK businesses up to &pound;8 billion per year. It might be worthwhile mentioning this during your meeting and suggesting changes that would help everyone in the company.</p>
<p><strong>5 &ndash; Rights</strong></p>
<p>Under the Equality Act 2010, you have both the right to protection against discrimination as well as the right to request for reasonable adjustments at work to support you with your mental illness. Make sure to do some research beforehand so you know exactly what you can expect as a result of a meeting with your boss.</p>

Mental health in the workplace

<p>The world around us has changed significantly in recent months with many of us spending a large amount of time at home and away from our usual routines. This change has had a real impact on the way we perceive the world around us and many of us are now feeling low, anxious or concerned about finances, health and the future. As individuals we will all react differently to this change, however it's important to remember that it's okay to feel these things.&nbsp;</p>
<p>With so many things out of our control at the moment, a great way for us to help look after our mental health is to focus on what <em>can</em> control. Below are 8 practical ways to look after your mental health.</p>
<h3><strong>Keep active</strong></h3>
<p>Regular exercise is scientifically proven to improve not just your physical health and fitness, but your mental wellbeing too. It can boost your self-esteem, help you concentrate, sleep and feel better.</p>
<p>Since the pandemic began there have been a huge number of people providing free exercise classes online or via apps. However, exercise doesn't just mean doing sport or going to the gym. Walks in the park, gardening or housework can also keep you active.</p>
<p>Did you know? The <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Couch to 5K app</a> is a free NHS app to help you get off the sofa and get running to stay healthy.&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Stay connected with others</strong></h3>
<p>Maintaining healthy relationships with people is important for your mental wellbeing. With the ever-increasing use of technology such as text, WhatsApp and instant messenger, many of us no longer make phone calls or spend the time talking to our friends and relatives. Taking the time to connect with our friends and relatives during this time will enable you to share your experiences and form emotional support networks.</p>
<p>A positive from this pandemic is the increased use of platforms such as Zoom, Houseparty and Skype which allow you to talk to &amp; see someone who is miles away.&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Have routine in your day</strong></h3>
<p>For many of us the structure of our daily routine has gone. I've heard some say this is a good outcome of lockdown, where they feel free from their normal routine and daily restrictions. It can be easy to think that staying up late watching TV and then lying in the next morning, followed by a day of doing nothing would be relaxing, however it can also result in feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed and out of control.</p>
<p>Whether you're working from home or not, try to get up and get ready in the same way as normal, keep to the same hours you normally would, and stick to the same sleeping schedule. Developing a daily routine creates structure in our lives, breaks bad habits, builds self-confidence, reduces stress and helps us to cope with change.</p>
<h3><strong>Eat and drink well</strong></h3>
<p>Advice suggests that as well as affecting our physical health, what we eat may also affect the way we feel, and improving your diet may help to improve your mood, give you more energy and help you think clearly. Top tips:</p>
<ul>
<li>Eat breakfast.</li>
<li>Instead of eating a large lunch &amp; dinner, try eating smaller portions spaced out more regularly throughout the day.</li>
<li>Avoid food which makes your blood sugar rise and fall rapidly such as sweets, biscuits, sugary drinks and alcohol.</li>
<li>Reduce your caffeine intake.</li>
<li>Stay hydrated, drinking between 6-8 glasses of fluid each day. Tea, coffee, juices and smoothies all count towards your intake but be aware that they may contain caffeine or sugar. Water is best!</li>
<li>Eat your 5-a-day. Fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced are fine.</li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>Display acts of kindness</strong></h3>
<p>In response to the coronavirus outbreak, the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week 2020 was 'kindness'. According to a study completed in 2020 by the Mental Health foundation, kindness is linked to increased feelings of happiness, wellbeing and life satisfaction.</p>
<ul>
<li>Saying "thank you" is a small gesture but could really brighten someone's day.</li>
<li>Call a friend or relative and ask how they are. I refer you to point 2 - speaking is much better than text. Most importantly, really listen to their answer.</li>
<li>Give an honest compliment.</li>
<li>Volunteer in your local community.</li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>Don't stay glued to the news</strong></h3>
<p>The amount of information and news we have about the coronavirus outbreak online is vast. If you find that the news is causing you stress, then to support positive mental health it is important to find a balance. Don't avoid all news - it's important to keep educating yourself, but limit your news intake and make sure you fact-check information from the news, social media or other people. Trustworthy sources include <a href="https://www.gov.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">gov.uk</a> or the <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NHS website.</a></p>
<h3><strong>Do something for yourself</strong></h3>
<p>Feeling worried or anxious may stop us from doing the things we used to enjoy. Setting goals and focussing on your hobby or learning new skills can be a great way to meet people, build your self-esteem and feel a sense of achievement.</p>
<h3><strong>Seek help</strong></h3>
<p>None of us are superhuman and when we're feeling overwhelmed, the best solution is often to talk to someone rather than to internalise your feelings. If you're struggling to cope, then turn to a trusted friend or family member to talk, but if this isn't possible there are a large number of other services there to help:&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Your GP is there to help you with your mental health as well as your physical health.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/?WT.tsrc=Search&amp;WT.mc_id=Brand&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMInvurm-ic6gIV0u7tCh25PQ28EAAYASAAEgJJj_D_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Every Mind Matters</a> provides tips and advice developed by experts and approved by the NHS. <li>The NHS provides a number of <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/mental-health-helplines/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">mental health helplines</a>, whether you're concerned about yourself or a loved one.</li>
<li>The mental health charity Mind provide <a href="https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/guides-to-support-and-services/seeking-help-for-a-mental-health-problem/where-to-start/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">step-by-step advice</a> on how to seek help for a mental health problem.</li>
</ul>

With so many things out of our control at the moment, a great way for us to help look after our mental health is to focus on what we can control.
